Thank You for Serving

U.S. Army, Operation Iraqi Freedom ’07-’08
The advertising industry and the military have something in common: those who benefit most from what we do are the least likely to realize it.
But this week, I had the pleasure of attending a job fair created by Advertising Week and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) called Operation Deploy. Ed Vick, Board Chairman of IAVA and former CEO of Y&R, was instrumental in making the job fair happen. I had the pleasure of speaking with him at length during the event.
As a Vietnam veteran, Ed understands how difficult it can be to successfully transition from the military. Though I have come home to a much more welcoming America than he did, we both needed the same thing as newly minted civilians: someone to give us a chance. So it was incredibly gratifying to be in a room full of companies that were ready and willing to do just that.
Nearly 30 companies were present, each with open positions they wanted to fill with veterans. They were excited to hear our stories and anxious to tell us how we could fit into their organizations. They understood how much value vets can add to an organization.
We are good leaders and good followers. We are responsible. We share the glory. We excel in teams. We are honest and loyal. We are disciplined. We are hard-wired to put the mission first. And this week, we are grateful to Advertising Week, IAVA and Ed Vick for giving us a chance.
