Yoga Wednesdays in Chicago

Before last February, I was what some people might call a “yo-yo yogi.” I liked yoga, and I would go to sporadic classes, as in five a year. I would get really into it for a couple weeks, and then just stop for some reason or another. Those reason ranged from not having enough time, not liking the instructor or thinking the studio was too far away.
 
I was always getting emails and seeing fliers about yoga at work, but didn't even consider it until a coworker was talking about it one day, and saying how much she loved it. She insisted I try it out, and I reluctantly went the next week.
 
I'm not going to lie, it was hard. I considered myself to be "good" at yoga, but in reality I was just a beginner. I huffed and puffed through that first class. A whole hour of yoga with my peers, in front of whom I didn’t want to look bad, was certainly a challenge. But I went back the next week, and then the next and the next. And, I've now gone almost every week since February.
 
I'm at a point where I so look forward to yoga at work once a week at noon. People ask me if it's weird to go work out in the middle of the work day, but it really isn't. It helps to balance and center me. It sounds cliché, but it really does put me in a Zen state of mind. It's still just as challenging as that first day, too. Just in a different way. Our amazing instructor, Piper, knows exactly how far to push us. Every week we build onto what we've learned in previous weeks, but Piper is awesome at incorporating new people into the fold.
 
I find myself doing poses I never dreamed I would be able to do. And it's so inspiring to be around other people who are also achieving their goals. We are all working toward better bodies and a better state of mind, together. Having steady, easy access to a yoga class every week has helped me to stay on top of it. It's encouraged me to incorporate yoga more into my life as well, outside of work. 
 
It's no secret that practicing yoga has many benefits. Since starting, I find myself feeling more calm and confident and physically I feel stronger and healthier. I even breathe differently. Once you start practicing yoga consistently, it seeps into every aspect of your life, in the best way possible.  I am so grateful that Draftfcb has a weekly yoga class, and that the agency has found such a wonderful instructor. Whenever I tell friends about these classes, they get pretty jealous. I can't blame them. Having access to a great class right in your own workspace is just another perk of working here.
