They Named the City After Me

By Mansura Ghaffar, corporate communications manager, New York
Well, no, they didn’t. My fingers weren’t fast enough to tweet #SimCity so that the team running the live gaming session could bask in the awesomeness that is naming a virtual city “Mansura-Town” or something along that line…
If my thoughts sound disjointed, it’s because I’m still coming off the high from 7 days of playing “Let’s All Be Mayor,” a live, online, city-building gaming session for the newest version of Maxis’ SimCity.
Draftfcb San Francisco was the brain-child of this first ever, global social gaming experiment. From Feb. 26 to March 4, for four hours each day, players joined an online gaming community where each day developers constructed a new city based on players’ votes and decisions from online, Facebook and Twitter polls. Then, players watched the consequences of their decisions in real-time.
The virtual site was a smart prequel to the launch of the complete SimCity game on March 5 since it illustrated a number of the cool new game features. It was also an incredible feat which showcased our agency’s digital chomps. San Francisco was also responsible for some hilarious TV spots promoting the game which featured Adam DeVine, star of Comedy Central’s Workaholics.
So how successful was it? Well, on day one the game attracted thousands of fans worldwide and crashed the server. Thankfully, developers had the site up and running in a matter of minutes and it was smooth sailing from there.
Congrats to our San Francisco team for conceptualizing the digital strategy which gave many of us a break from the work day. If you missed the fun, all the games were recorded and can be viewedhere.
